Public Relations (Conclusion)

Finally it comes to the end of writing this blog. After a few post of writing about my perspective and reality of PR, now I have a better understanding of what PR looks like in the real working life. Through this assignment, now I know PR is not as easy as what I think. It requires experiences but not only the qualification in certificate and variety of skills to work as a PR practitioner. Besides that, I have finally know what is Corporate Comm. and PR. They are actually almost the same but only a few differences. Through this assignment, it makes me to rethink again whether I am suitable for PR or not. After comparing my perspective and the reality of PR, I still think that PR is a fun and exciting job.

Moreover, today I also found a video that talk about the reality of PR. The girl inside the video work as a PR practitioner. What she says from the video is exactly same as what Mr. Alex, Mr.Shaun and Ms.Renee said. She says that you do not need to major in communications as long as you have liberal arts background or experiences, then you can become a PR practitioner. Furthermore, she also says that PR people should have to skill of communication to socialize with the public. She says that if you are a forgetful or not a organize person, you are not suitable to become a PR person. Besides, she also says that PR people do not have a normal working hour which what Shaun said it previously. Lastly, she also says that PR is a fun, exciting and challenging job which is same as what I think.

This is the video that I watch today.

Before I end my last post, I would like to end it with a quote which says by Alvin Adam, one of the famous actor and news presenter from Indonesia. He says that "My view is different. Public Relations are a key component of any operation in this day of instant communications and rightly inquisitive citizen".  (Click in for more Public Relation quotes) Last but not least, thank you for those who pay attention and time for viewing my blog. Appreciate so much from all of you. Thank you and have a nice day!

Job Scope & Skills Required

Time passes as fast as lightning. It turns into the month of June today and it is Monday. Happy Monday Blue everyone! Just have my PR group presentation today and I am like finally another presentation has down but 2 more presentations to go before I end this semester. Bah :( Anyway, after today's presentation, Kevin and I go and meet a person which is Ms.Renee. We have make an appointment with Ms. Renee on today and I can't wait to see her! Ms. Renee is a part time PR lecturer in my previous college because she has a lot of PR experiences in the industry. She is one of my favourite lecturer. Now, she also works as the news presenter at Wisma TV Angkasapuri Kuala Lumpur. Today we discuss and talk about the job scope and the skills required by a PR person. After we finish our talk, I have realise I only know a few part about PR. There are still a lot job scopes and skills that required by a PR person that I do not know and haven discover yet.

Ms Renee as a news presenter

In my perspective, I think that PR  job scope is all about planning and execute the event only. Their task is to communicate and update with the clients and help the clients to plan an event. Besides that, I think that PR job is to deal with the public and maintaining a good relationships with the public such as the stakeholders. I always think that PR has a flexible time to do their job. Additionally, in my perspective I think that PR person only requires the skills of communication. Most importantly, I think a PR person must know how to communicate and social with the public. In my opinion, I think that once a person polish the skills of communication, then he/she is excellent in PR.

After chat with Ms.Renee today, I finally know that all my perspectives in PR are just only part of it. Ms.Renee tells me that the job scope of PR is not only about planning and executing the event. After the event, we have to do a post mortem about the event. This is to prevent the same mistakes from happen again and to improve it to become better next time when organizing event. So, as a PR person, follow up with the event or clients is very essential in real life working. Besides that, Ms.Renee also tells me that PR need to maintain a good relationships with the public (as I mentioned before) especially the media. This is because by having a good relationships with the media, they will write a good press release of your company.

Subsequently, Ms.Renee tells me that PR is not only require communication skills but also writing skills and visual skills. In my perspective, I think that PR has a flexible time to do their job. I am wrong. PR requires writing skills too. Most of the time they stay at the office and write media release of their company. They have to give correct information to the public. Other than that, they also have to write the media release in interesting but not boring way in order to attract public to pay attention on it. Besides, visual skills is also very important for PR people. They have to work closely with the art designer, web designer and the social media designer. They have to oversee the advertising or artworks of the company. This is to check whether their creative works follow or not follow with the company's standard. Last but not least, Ms.Renee tells me that the most important thing to work as a PR practitioner is to have a good attitude. Attitude decide who you are and I totally agree with her.

I took a photo with Ms Renee today :D

My post end at here today. Bye.

Public Relations VS Corporate Communication

Today I want to share some information that I learned form Mr.Alex's tutorial class. As I mentioned before, the purpose I open this blog is to compare and contrast my perspective on PR and the reality of PR. Today I found out something that is really out of my expectation. It totally change my view and let me to have a better understanding on corporate communication and PR.

In the past, I always think that Corporate Comm. is very different compare with PR. In my perspective, Corporate Comm. have a more stable working hour and job scope compare with PR. Besides that, I think that if you choose to study Corporate Comm., you cannot become a PR person in the future and PR cannot work as Corporate Comm. I always thought they are form two different department.

After today Mr. Alex's class, I finally found out another reality of PR which is different from what I think. I have found out that Corporate Comm. is actually same as PR in the real working life. Mr. Alex told us they are actually come from the same department. PR is actually parks under Corporate Comm. department and they almost have the same job scope. I am shocked when I listen to this because I always thought that PR is different with Corporate Comm. and thanks to Mr.Alex for telling us this reality. Moreover, he also said that most of the company do not have two different department which are Corporate Comm. department and PR department. They will usually only have one department either is PR department or Corporate Comm. department. No matter is which department whether is Corporate Comm. department or PR department, they are actually sharing the same job scope and do the same thing in the company.

This is Mr. Alex with sunglasses haha

This is Mr.Alex without glasses loll

Furthermore, I also did some research on the internet about the differences of Corporate Comm. and PR. The article (click in for the article) that I read from what I found at internet is there are only few differences between Corporate Comm. and PR. The main differences of these two is Corporate Comm. helps management build bridges between departments so that communication flows smoothly while PR is to help management in identifying, building and nurturing relationships between the company and various public. Anyhow, after today, I have a clearer understanding of what PR is in the reality.

Working Time & Experiences

Hi! I am back again! :) As I mentioned in my first post, I said that I will find out more about reality of PR in real life. Today I am glad that I am able to meet one of my ex-lecturer -----> Mr. Shaun! Awhh, I miss him so much because I have been not seeing him for such a long time since I graduatd from my diploma until now. So, today I am so happy because I am able to date him out for yamcha in one of the newly open cafe in Damansara which is Yellow Brick Road cafe. Shaun is now no longer a lecturer. Before that, he is a good lecturer from my previous college which has a lot of experiences in Event Management and Public Relations. He worked in event company and hospitality industry for a few years already. And now, he is one of the owners of Yellow Brick Road cafe! So glad that he is now able to open a cafe and makes his dream come true.

This is the Yellow Brick Road cafe

So, back to point again, today we have talked about the working time of Public Relations in real life. In my point of view, I think that PR working time is as same as normal office working hours which is 9.00am - 5.00pm. Besides that, I also think that PR people work from Monday to Friday only and day off at Saturday and Sunday. When it is public holidays such as Christmas, Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, we also able to get an off day same as others. Moreover, we also talk about the experiences and the importance of having PR certificate. In my perspective, I think that it is important to get a high qualification of certificate when you entering a company work as a PR person. I think that the higher qualification in your certificate like Degree and Master, the higher chances the company will hire you. I also think that you do not need to have experience also can entering a company easily as long as you have a high qualification in your certificate. But, after I yamcha with Shaun today, I have realised that I am TOTALLY WRONG!!

Shaun, who is a experienced person in PR told me that PR person does not have normal working hours. They work from morning until night. Besides that, they also have to standby any-time if the clients need you. When there is an event around the corner, you even have to work during midnight to do the set up or oversees the event. Besides that, if you always think that you can enjoy during public holidays, then you are wrong. PR people work in public holidays when other people enjoying their holidays. This is because most of the company organize their events on public holidays because there are a lot of people who can attend your event. So, if you still think that you gonna rest during the public holidays, please forget about it. There are always no holidays for PR people when it is public holidays.

In addition, Shaun also told me about his experience while working as a PR person. He told me that certificate is not that important in the real working life. Some company may see your certificate but some do not see your certificate. By having a higher qualification certificate is let you to have a higher position in the future. A higher qualification certificate is required when you decide to work as a lecturer or in the education institution. Shaun told me that experience is very important when you work as a PR person. Most of the company will choose to have a experience PR person rather than a high qualification in certificate but no experience person at all to work in their company. So, in the end, he told me that experience is more important than the certificate in the real working life.

After a few hours of yamcha section with Shaun, I have realised that my perspective in PR are wrong. Thanks to Shaun that he has teaches me the reality of PR today and I will gonna think again what he said before I sleep today. Anyhow, before I end today's post, let me share some pictures that I took at YBR cafe.

This is their signature logo.

Ordered their Big Breakfast and I can't finish it because it is a big portion haha

Public Relations (Introduction)

Hi~ Today I have created this blog because I decided to do my individual PR assignment by using blog. I chose to use blog to present my assignment is because I am familiar with blog and it is not so stress, I guess haha. So, today I would like to share some of my perspectives on Public Relations. Before that, let me share some funny pictures that I found on internet of what people think Public Relations are.

Funny right? Well, back to the main point, for me, I think that Public Relations which we called it as PR is a fun and exciting job. I love it because I think it is challenging. I love to make new friends from different background, culture and countries because I am an outgoing person. Boring job like those who work at office does not suit me because I hate doing the same thing all over again. If you ask me to do the same thing all over again, you better kill me because I will die in boringness. Thus, I think that if I choose PR as my future career, it suits my character. I think if I really work as PR in my future career, I will love this job so much. But, one thing that I really worry about is it is hard to find a PR job in Malaysia because it is not so famous yet. And one thing I keep repeating asking myself is am I really understand what PR is because all I mentioned just now are all my perspectives. Is my perspectives meet with the reality of PR in real life? Give me some time to find out the reality of PR and I will tell you in my next post. Stay tuned....
